I recently viewed a number of secondary schools with my daughter, and noticed that some had filthy floors, walls and desks, studded with gum, yet one school did not. The reason? There were frequent small ‘gum bins’ mounted on the walls along the corridors. If children can use them and keep their environment clean, why not provide ‘gum bins’ in the street, and see if adults can follow their example?.

If only Rio could have lasted forever. What we saw there, once again, was that any contest staged on fields, courts, tracks or courses, or in pools, open water or rings, is better than one decided through debates, fundraising, media buys, ground games and electoral votes. Seeing our polarized politics grow even worsesince Rio’s closing ceremony, can Americans ever hope to be as united again as we were when we delighted at the parade of red , white , and blue bedecked athletes, most of them swimmers, standing atop the medal stand in Brazil?Team USA won 46 gold medals in Rio, 19 more than any other nation, and more than a third of them 16 were won by its swim team.

Harvard College recently rescinded admissions acceptances to at least 10 incoming members of the Class of 2021 for posting offensive memes in a private Facebook group. They do not care that they hurt other people because they don view them as equals or really see them as people.

But perhaps our outrage is misguided and purist. What can be expected from policy Lilliputians and rent seekers in the Beltway when the United States government, with all of its talk on human rights in Africa, has displayed gutless leadership on the matter. Well respected international leaders like Condoleeza Rice, Barack Obama, Ban Ki moon, Kofi Annan, Lula da Silva, and Nicolas Sarkozy bend over backward every time they meet President Obiang.

It’s the car I really miss. It was a silver ’06 M45 Sport that I got used in 2008 for a great price, since premium gas was like $4 a gallon at the time. I was like 26 years old, and it was way too much car for me. The Carlyle didn’t look half bad in the show a little seedy maybe, but with potted plants out front. Walking past the Carlyle today, I noticed it shines neon bright as one of Ocean Drive’s sleekest hotels. At night, crowds of club goers teeter past on stiletto heels or swig booze out of margarita glasses the size of their faces..
