How to Look After your Pets for Less

12/06/2012

Being a responsible and caring pet owner can be an expensive business so we decided to write a blog post this week dedicated to the pooch or pussy-cat in your life! Below we have included three tips for saving the pennies on pet-related items which are most commonly used such as flea treatments, pet food and insurance.

Make your own flea repellent & doggie shampoo:

Making your own flea repellent is so easy! All you need is to mix equal parts of white vinegar and water together in a spray bottle and apply to your pooch. Repeat the treatment every couple of days until the fleas have disappeared and give your dog a good ‘bath’ with your homemade doggy dry shampoo (see below). Preventing fleas in this way is so much better than using harsh chemicals as it is safe for your pets and children, cheaper than conventional treatments and environmentally friendly. This treatment can also be used on cats but be careful of sharp claws as your kitty will probably not be that happy at being sprayed!  Another option for cats is to steep lemon slices in boiled distilled water over night and dab the resulting solution onto the fur with a cotton ball. Avoid soaking your cat’s fur in this case.

Dog dry shampoo is equally as simple to make! You will need some baking soda and your hands and that’s it! Simply sprinkle baking soda on your dog’s coat and rub in and follow with a thorough brushing to leave the coat clean and smelling fresh. This dry shampoo also kills fleas!

Shop around for insurance:

Getting pet insurance may not be cost effective unless you are 100% sure you will be getting all of the promised benefits of the cover. Always read the fine print, ask tons of questions and don’t sign up to anything unless you know for sure what you are getting, and that it is worth the money.

Buy food in bulk:

It may be that you can save tons of money by buying pet food in bulk from your local supermarket or pet store, or online. Rather than purchasing a bit of pet food with your weekly shop, looking into buying a few months worth at a time could be worth it to see if there are savings to be made. However, this may not be a great idea for you if you don’t have much storage space.
